HopeHealth and FMU announce partnership for primary health careposted on Tuesday, March 01, 2011 HopeHealth and Francis Marion University are pleased to announce the opening of a satellite office on FMU's campus. Beginning Monday, Feb. 21, Dr. Paul DeMarco, FMU's director of Rural Community Health Programs, will begin accepting HopeHealth patients at the new office located in the FMU Education Foundation building. Our volume of new patients consistently grows, and Francis Marion University has offered us an ideal opportunity to accommodate these patients quickly and with the same attention and compassion they receive at our main site, said Carl Humphries, chief executive officer at HopeHealth. We take pride in our ability to provide quality and accessible health care, said Humphries, and we look forward to growing this ability at our site at FMU. HopeHealth is a non-profit organization that operates a community health center in Florence and is dedicated to providing health care that is affordable and accessible to all. When HopeHealth received its Federally Qualified Health Center status in 2007, it served 700 patients. Now, just more than three years later, it has opened its doors to more than 5,000 individuals of all ages, regardless of insurance status. At its headquarters at 600 East Palmetto Street in Florence, HopeHealth employs four staff physicians, two family nurse practitioners and a licensed behavioral health counselor. These services are supplemented with an in-house laboratory and pharmacy to save patients time and money. This new partnership with HopeHealth is indicative of the university's commitment to serve our region through community outreach initiatives, said FMU President Luther F. Carter. Not only will the combined resources of the university and HopeHealth expand access to quality health care, the new site will also provide additional opportunities for our students to engage in experiential learning through internships and practicum programs. DeMarco, who has practiced medicine in underserved rural areas more than 17 years, will accept patients for HopeHealth on a part-time basis. To become a patient of HopeHealth at either site, call (843) 667-9414. HopeHealth at FMU offers an in-house laboratory, and patients have access to all the services offered at HopeHealth's main campus.
