HopeHealth gathers for the 14th annual AIDSWALK

Walking the Walk

posted on Sunday, January 15, 2012

The 14th Annual AIDSWALK was held Saturday, December 3 in three locations: in Florence at Central United Methodist Church, in Orangeburg at Edisto Memorial Gardens, and in Aiken at Osbon Park. The AIDSWALK is an opportunity to bring the community together to remember those who have been affected by HIV/AIDS and to raise funds for those programs at HopeHealth that support prevention and treatment efforts.

HopeHealth held a program in observation of World AIDS Day at Wayside Chapel Baptist Church in Florence on Thursday, December 1 at 7 p.m. We raised awareness for HIV/AIDS and celebrated the lives of those affected by the disease. The program included a scripture reading and prayer, an interpretive praise dance by youth group Acts of Praise, a powerful speech about facing AIDS by HopeHealth's Ryan White Coordinator Tamala Hawks, a call to action by Rick Morrison, and HopeHealth employee Sharon Poole sang a moving song leading to the candlelight vigil. HopeHealth CEO Carl Humphries wrapped up the evening with a few remarks.

The following Saturday, hundreds of people from the Pee Dee community gathered for the AIDSWALK. Families, sororities, and church groups are just a few of the many represented at the Walk. The 2011 AIDSWALK raised more than $6,400. These funds will go towards assisting clients with basic needs such as shelter, food and clothing. They will help pay for medical expenses not covered by our grants. They will help us educate the public and raise awareness for how to stay protected. They bought holiday gifts for Children of Hope, and they will allow for expansion of our current services so that more clients can be reached in the Pee Dee. We are grateful for the continued support over the years from our community for this important program.
